Resilient Enclosure Design Considerations for the Gulf Coast
Monday, November 27, 4:00 PM
“Resiliency” is the latest buzzword in building design and construction, much like “green” has been in recent years. This focus is especially important in light of recent weather events that have impacted our built environment and communities. A key question is: what does a resilient building design entail and how does this affect our building enclosure designs? This presentation explores the definition and importance of resilience, with a specific focus on building enclosures. We will review past and present trends in construction codes, standards, and design guidelines that focus on resilience. The session will also review lessons learned from failure investigations and recovery assistance during previous natural disasters (including high wind, precipitation, flood, and hail) to explore design considerations for resilience in roof and facade systems.
After attending this seminar, participants will be able to:
- Understand the definition and importance of resilience in building design.
- Recognize trends in code changes, with specific focus on wind, precipitation, flooding, and hail.
- Distinguish between design for resilience and conventional code-based design.
- Discuss strategies for resilience in roof and facade design.

Once again, we are excited to announce our most anticipated CSI Houston Chapter meeting of the year with guest speaker Pat Kiley. With his eloquent style and gripping presentation he will provide a recap of the year past and will attempt to shed light on what’s in store for the Houston construction market in 2018.
The Cistern at Buffalo Bayou Park is a former drinking water reservoir built in 1926 for the City of Houston. After operating for decades, an irreparable leak was discovered and after a few years, the reservoir was decommissioned in 2007. Now open to the public, CSI Houston has arranged for a private tour of this fascinating underground relic.
Join us after the tour at Southbank Seafood Bar for a short program and drinks. Stay tuned for further information…
